Ipe Deck: Winter Build

Seasons in New Hampshire pose a challenge for outdoor builders like us, but by planning projects well we don’t have to stop construction. For this ipe deck we installed footings in the fall just before the ground froze. With the footings in place and the materials on site, we were able to return a few months later in the dead of winter to build the deck.

The owner had a pool cover installed that attached to the inside of the pool coping. This allowed us to lay the ipe deck boards all the way to the edge and at the same level as the pool coping without getting in the way of the cover. We placed the boards at an angle and across the framing. We used a mixture of pressure treated wood, ipe deck boards, and black metal balusters for the railing. We also built a custom gate with a pool safe latch to match the rest of the deck. The great thing about building this ipe deck in the winter is that the owners can immediately enjoy their pool as soon as the weather turns warm. Spring was in full swing when we returned to photograph the finished deck and the owners could take full advantage of the warmer weather.

Here are some photos from the project:

It is a perfect complement to our curved pool.
